Chapter 23

Mandy

Rebecca didn’t explicitly say not to come see her again, but it was implied. Neither of us wanted me to pick up any germs that I could potentially bring to the preschool. And although she didn’t say it, I had the impression that she wanted some space.

She’d taken the week off work to stay home with Abby. We talked on the phone every night, but they were short calls that mostly consisted of updates on her condition. She was steadily improving, for which I was glad. But I missed the way things had been between Rebecca and me, and I wondered if we’d ever get back to that.

When Jamie asked how the two of them were doing, I tried to stay on the topic of Abby’s health. As great as Jamie was, she was also my coworker, and I preferred to keep the details of my love life somewhat private.

Charlene, though? She was a friend. And what were friends for, if not to take the brunt of my dissatisfaction?

“I can’t believe you wanted to come here,” she said when she found me at the bar of Crush about four nights after Abby went to the hospital. “And, wait, is that an actual beer you’re drinking?”

“It’s nonalcoholic.” I rolled my eyes to show I was joking. “I needed a drink.” This was actually my second, but I didn’t have to tell her everything.

“What happened to not drinking?” She waved the bartender over and gestured to show she’d take what I was having.

“Out the window,” I said, “along with the rest of my plans.”

“What?”

Sighing, I gave her a quick rundown of what’d happened—how I’d broken down and had sex with Rebecca. I’d been slacking off at reading my pile of nonfiction books ever since I started seeing her, too. The only thing I’d been keeping up with was working out and eating healthy, and I hadn’t done either of those since the night of Abby’s scare, either.

Since I’d failed at everything else, I’d figured I might as well throw in the towel completely. Alcohol wouldn’t hurt me any more than I was already hurt.

“Her child is sick and you’re not over there with her?” Charlene asked.

“She’s busy.” I pictured how standoffish she’d been last time. She’d barely wanted to kiss me. “I’m not going to force myself on her at such a rough time.”

“If you want to be her partner, you should be there for her.”

“I do want to.” I sighed. “I didn’t get the chance to ask if she’d be my girlfriend, and now I’m sure she’d say no.”

“Why don’t you try it and find out?”

I shook my head and took a long sip of my beer. The buzz was beginning to hit me, and while the familiar feeling should’ve comforted me, it felt less pleasant than I remembered.

“How are you doing?” I asked. “What’ve you been up to?”

“Not a lot,” Charlene said, and hesitated before continuing. “Found out Olivia’s got a new girlfriend already.”

“That fucker.” I slammed my fist on the bar so hard the bartender jumped.
